Rome for the second time and Joe Fagan is the manager, this time the atmosphere
is electric...
Liverpool in Roma's backyard the fans were screaming. Joe stood there at the dugout and he was whistling as if he was in the back garden,"Nice night isn't it lad"as he winked to me...he left the Olympic Stadium with the European Cup and I left with a sore head after a bottle bounced off my brow from an angry Italian.

Tommy Smith and the special smile.

Tommy Smith had headed the golden goal of his career in Rome and at the end of the game I was determined to take the ultimate pic of Tommy, but he ran the full length of the pitch to trainer Ronnie Moran...
I followed and placed myself to capture this picture, breathless later I asked Tommy why he had run from the celebrations to Ronnie,"He kept my front teeth in his pocket for me and I didn't want to be photographed without them"....... sorry Tommy.

Where is the cup?

Holiday Inn hotel London and Liverpool had won the cup again at Wembley beating Bruges 1-0 Dalglish the scorer.
The celebrations had gone on through the night, next morning I was in a hurry for a page one pic for the Echo...but where was the cup?!!!
The receptionist didn't know, the manager of the hotel had no idea, the security were looking worried, I looked in the reception suite and then someone suggested Kenny had it last.
A gentle knock on his bedroom door and there was the cup on the pillow in Kenny's bed.
I left the room with the cup and on the trail of Alan Hansen...

I found Alan Hansen about to have a morning bath and persuaded him to take the cup with him for a picture, it made a great pic and I was ready to rush to the wire to send my pix to Liverpool..one problem I still had the European Cup in my hand...
Who should I give it to? I eventually persuaded the hotel staff to put it in the safe.

ROME '77 changed everything, Liverpool fans adopted the eternal city as their own.
I was at Rome railway station to see the first fans arrive after 3 days on the train ...the Liverpool chants were heard before the train reached the platform, and I was confronted with a mass of red and white t-shirts, no luggage (!) and a will to win the European Cup for the first time.

The police in the Olympic Stadium (looking so young) were bemused by the vitality and the wit of the fans as they spontaneously broke into song, banners emerging from every corner of the stadium.

But quite a contrast to see a nail biter at Goodison Park as fans in the 60s climb onto the church roof for a grandstand view of a cup tie.

'

The action is on the pitch but I have always been fascinated at football grounds to watch the terraces and the way the fans react, they make great photographs. This supporter at Norwich City scoring against Liverpool could not hide his delight even though he had left his teeth at home.

The mighty Kop..I have spent years laying down in front of it, a sandwich between the fans and the action."Hey mister, you are on fire"as another discarded cigarette butt landed on my jacket, the smoking fibres stamped out by a passing police officer.
On a wet afternoon walking to the Kop resembled walking into a giant hair dryer with the incredible heat from the packed fans.

Not a common site at Anfield, the team were struggling in a European tie, the fans on edge and the Reds were OUT..then the tears which made the best news picture on the night...
PS I lied about Runcorn....and many fans and non-fans would perhaps prefer to see supporters like this!

The cricket World Cup has presented great action pictures in countries that lend themselves to the best cricket conditions..but then nature changes everything..and in this case it poured with rain in Guyana leaving the ground staff looking cheesed off and decidedly damp!
It also made a terrific picture which has those three vital ingredients weather and people...and humour.

Again humour and the best sort of humour for a photographer..candid camera.
The picture I took in the Lake District at the Langdale Show was made for me by the sign and the man eating his ice cream.
A man of smaller build would not have grabbed my attention, the picture is a spontaneous reaction to life and its way of creating a humorous moment.

Again, unintentional and not in the least offensive, and it even raised a smile with my Welsh colleagues.
But the sign in the background for Welsh sheep sales created a smile as I walked the county show looking for a pic.

Did they know they were sitting in front of that sign...of all the places at the Cheshire Show this couple sat in front of the "Do Not Touch" sign to enjoy their sandwiches, I took the pic and they were puzzled as to why I was photographing an empty enclosure.
But then an ordinary picture suddenly had the element of humour to it.
So if, as a professional photographer and picture editor I was to offer advice, it would be to always look beyond the obvious and try to structure your picture, this case try not to be seen, and so keep the candidness of the occasion.
