ROME '77 changed everything, Liverpool fans adopted the eternal city as their own.
I was at Rome railway station to see the first fans arrive after 3 days on the train ...the Liverpool chants were heard before the train reached the platform, and I was confronted with a mass of red and white t-shirts, no luggage (!) and a will to win the European Cup for the first time.

The police in the Olympic Stadium (looking so young) were bemused by the vitality and the wit of the fans as they spontaneously broke into song, banners emerging from every corner of the stadium.

But quite a contrast to see a nail biter at Goodison Park as fans in the 60s climb onto the church roof for a grandstand view of a cup tie.
'
The action is on the pitch but I have always been fascinated at football grounds to watch the terraces and the way the fans react, they make great photographs. This supporter at Norwich City scoring against Liverpool could not hide his delight even though he had left his teeth at home.

The mighty Kop..I have spent years laying down in front of it, a sandwich between the fans and the action."Hey mister, you are on fire"as another discarded cigarette butt landed on my jacket, the smoking fibres stamped out by a passing police officer.
On a wet afternoon walking to the Kop resembled walking into a giant hair dryer with the incredible heat from the packed fans.

Not a common site at Anfield, the team were struggling in a European tie, the fans on edge and the Reds were OUT..then the tears which made the best news picture on the night...
PS I lied about Runcorn....and many fans and non-fans would perhaps prefer to see supporters like this!
